The full walk-through
How Nova Scotia businesses, farms and fisheries plan solar: Rates 10, 11 and 12, commercial net metering up to 1 MW, Efficiency Nova Scotia and the federal credit.
How a project runs
- Find your rateRate 10 (small), 11 (general demand) or 12 (large). It sets which kWh solar replaces.
- Get interval dataShows how much of your load falls in daylight.
- Talk to Efficiency Nova Scotia firstLarger projects need pre-approval before you order equipment.
- Apply for net meteringCommercial net metering runs 27 to 200 kW, and up to 1 MW for farms, fisheries and aquaculture.
- Build and connectStructural review, install, inspection, meter.
- Claim the creditITC and CCA on the corporate return.
The money
| Program | What it's worth |
|---|---|
| Efficiency Nova Scotia | Business and non-profit incentives (pre-approval) |
| Commercial net metering | 27–200 kW; up to 1 MW for farms, fisheries, aquaculture |
| Federal Clean Technology ITC | 30% refundable |
| Capital cost allowance | Classes 43.1 and 43.2 |
Sizing to your load
On Rate 10 every kWh is worth 18 to 20¢, one of the strongest small-business solar cases in Canada. On Rate 11, solar cuts the higher-priced first block of energy first; demand needs a battery or load control.
Farms
Farms, fisheries and aquaculture can net-meter up to 1 MW, well above the 200 kW general limit.
What to have ready
- 12 months of bills, and interval (hourly or 15-minute) data from your utility if you can get it.
- Your rate class or rate code.
- Whether the business is incorporated and taxable. That decides the 30% credit.
- Roof age and condition, or the spot you'd use for a ground mount.
- Any expansion plans that will change your load in the next few years.
Questions to ask any installer
- Have you modelled my interval data, or just my monthly totals?
- Is the price shown before or after the federal tax credit, and does it assume the labour election?
- Which line on my bill does the system reduce: energy, demand, or both?
- Who handles the utility connection application, and how long does it take here?
- Has the roof or ground mount been checked by a structural engineer?

How business power is billed
How business power is billed
Small shops pay per kWh. Once you use 32,000 kWh a year or more, you move to a demand rate, where your highest draw in the month sets part of the bill.
| Rate | Who | Demand | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 · Small General | Under 45,000 kWh/yr | None ($22/month base) | 19.804¢ first 200 kWh, then 17.997¢ |
| 11 · General Demand | 32,000 kWh/yr+, under 1,800 kW | $9.809/kW | 15.738¢ for first 200 kWh per kW of demand, then 12.674¢ |
| 12 · Large General | 1,800 kW+ | $11.174/kVA | 11.78¢ |

Where solar saves
- On Rate 10, every kWh is worth roughly 18 to 20¢, the best solar economics we see for small business.
- On Rate 11, the first block of energy is priced higher, so solar cuts the most expensive kWh first.
- Demand charges need a battery or load management; solar alone won't hold your monthly peak down.

Business solar programs
For businesses, farms and non-profits
Nova Scotia businesses combine commercial net metering, Efficiency Nova Scotia incentives and, if incorporated, the 30% federal tax credit.
Efficiency Nova Scotia needs pre-approval on larger projects. Don't sign an equipment order before it's in hand.
