Commercial Solar Incentives by Province (2026)

October 12, 2026

There's one federal credit every incorporated business and farm should know, and a different mix of provincial money in each province. Here's what's open in 2026 in the five provinces we work in.

Federal: the Clean Technology ITC

A 30% refundable tax credit on new solar and storage, or 20% without the labour election. It runs at the full rate through 2033, is halved in 2034 and ends after that. Only taxable corporations and incorporated farms can claim it. It stacks with accelerated capital cost allowance (classes 43.1 and 43.2), and any government incentive reduces the cost it's calculated on. Read the full ITC guide.

Ontario

Save on Energy's Retrofit Program pays $1,000/kW-DC for systems up to 10 kW and $770/kW-AC from 10 kW to 1 MW, for systems that power your own load. The alternative is net metering up to 500 kW, with 12-month bill credits. You can't take both on the same system. Ontario business incentives.

British Columbia

BC Hydro's rebate covers business systems under 100 kW: up to $10,000 for solar and up to $10,000 for a battery, with written pre-approval before you buy. Exports earn 10¢/kWh under the self-generation rate, so size to daytime load. Solar equipment is PST-exempt. BC business incentives.

Alberta

No provincial rebate. Micro-generation allows systems under 5 MW sized to your yearly use; large micro-generation (150 kW to 5 MW) exports are credited at the pool price. Some municipalities offer commercial CEIP financing, Edmonton's up to $1 million. Alberta business incentives.

Nova Scotia

Commercial net metering runs from 27 to 200 kW, and up to 1 MW for farms, fisheries and aquaculture. Efficiency Nova Scotia has business and non-profit incentives that need pre-approval on larger projects. Nova Scotia business incentives.

New Brunswick

NB Power net metering goes up to 1 MW for commercial customers, and Save Energy NB runs a Commercial Buildings Retrofit Program. NB Power asks businesses to talk to Save Energy NB before work starts. New Brunswick business incentives.

The order that protects the money

  • Get any provincial or utility pre-approval before you order equipment.
  • Model the provincial incentive and the ITC together, since one reduces the other's base.
  • Decide on the labour election early; it moves the credit from 20% to 30%.
