The City of Toronto's Eco-Roof Incentive Program funds green roofs (up to $100,000) and cool roofs (up to $50,000) on Toronto homes and buildings. It does not fund solar panels, but it can cover the roof underneath if you are re-roofing before going solar.
Incentives are available for green and cool roof installations on Toronto homes and buildings[1].
What it pays
| Roof type | Incentive |
|---|---|
| Green roof | Up to $100,000 per project; building permit required |
| Cool roof, new membrane | $5/m², up to $50,000 |
| Cool roof coating | $2/m², up to $50,000 |
| Solar PV | Not eligible |
Green roofs must meet the Toronto Green Roof Construction Standard and need a building permit[1].
Why it matters for solar
Roof age is the most common reason a solar project gets complicated. If your roof is due, doing the cool roof and solar together avoids removing and reinstalling panels later. Finance the solar with HELP and lower its cost with the provincial rebate or net metering.
